Brick Lane Housing

A shortlisted development of 4 new build homes (including a wheelchair accessible unit), occupying an infill site identified by Tower Hamlets Homes, in the curtilage of an existing estate. The site marks the threshold where the world-famous Brick Lane changes character from vibrant urban street market, into quiet post-war housing estate. The equally popular Columbia Road Flower Market is close by but obscured within a tangle of residential estate routes.

We proposed a sensual object in the streetscape, wrapped three-dimensionally in diamonds of rich variegated timber. This formed a recognisable focal point at street level from the environs of each market. In doing so, the scheme becomes a beacon, reinforcing the pedestrian link between the two markets; whose trade is dependent on peripatetic ‘slow flows’ of foot and cycle traffic. As a result, a preferred route is intended to emerge amongst the choice of estate roads; enhancing peace and privacy for estate residents while, establishing legibility for tourists and visitors who want to enjoy both markets.
